Understanding SMART attributes

Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology exposes counters—not guarantees. Learn how to read normalized values alongside raw fields.

Normalized vs raw

Vendors remap attributes to a 1–253 “value” scale for quick scanning while hiding engineering units in the raw column. When troubleshooting, always photograph both columns—BIOS screens often omit raw numbers entirely.

High-signal attributes

  • Reallocated sector count — spare pool consumption.
  • Current pending sector — unstable reads not yet remapped.
  • UDMA CRC error count — frequently cable or dock related.
  • Temperature — context-dependent; trend matters.

attribute naming chaos

Attribute IDs are semi-standardized but labels differ. Cross-reference ID numbers with datasheets when migrating between Seagate, WD, and Toshiba families.
