Generally no. SMART data is stored in the drive’s firmware—logical filesystem repairs do not rewind wear statistics.

You might force the OS to remap unreadable clusters, but reallocations, interface error trends, and age-related attributes usually persist until the manufacturer intervenes. When in doubt, export SMART before and after maintenance.

Does RAID replace backups?

No. RAID tolerates certain hardware failures and keeps services running—it does not undo human mistakes, malware, or silent bit rot that propagates across mirrors.

Why do two programs report different temperatures?

Sensors sit in different locations; polling intervals differ; NVMe controllers may expose composite versus hotspot readings.

What should I prioritize in the first week after installing monitoring?

When should I replace a drive instead of continuing to observe?

Risk is personal: a gently aging secondary archive disk tolerates more drift than a sole copy of a video master. If restore time would blow a deadline, mirror early.

Can SMART look healthy shortly before a catastrophic failure?

Yes—firmware remaps bad spots quietly until spare pools shrink; controller or motor faults occasionally arrive without a long runway in SMART.

Use graphs for lead time, not guarantees. Pair telemetry with backup drills, listen for new mechanical noises on HDDs, and treat sudden latency cliffs as serious even when percentages look stable.

Should I defragment an SSD for health?

No. Spinning disks sometimes gain latency relief from defrag; SSDs already map logical blocks through flash translation layers—rewriting data for “contiguity” mostly burns program/erase cycles.

Prefer OS trim, firmware updates, and monitoring wear counters. Classic defrag belongs in HDD playbooks, not NAND maintenance.

Do extended self-tests wear out SSDs?

They add work, but sane cadence—after suspicion, not as a daily hobby—pales next to normal application writes.
